Fitzroy Hardware

When Lionel and Cheryl Sewart began managing the Fitzroy Crossing hardware store after Marra Worra Worra bought the business just three years ago, it was little more than a dusty, ramshackle shed with a bleak financial future.

So poor was the service that local businesses and residents were driving to Derby to buy their wares and hardware needs, preferring to spend their hard-earned money at a competing, out-of-town business more than a four-hour round trip away.

Not anymore.

After a complete overhaul of the business from top to bottom, a fresh look at the way things were done and a firm belief that you should “have the right stock available when people want to buy it”, the affable couple has turned the business around and are on track to push revenue over $3.4million (check) this year.

As former publicans and small business people, the Jack and Jill of all trades love living in Fitzroy Crossing and are determined to take the store to an even higher level.

“I’m from the old school where you believe that if you give people the best service you can, they will come back again and again,” Lionel said.

“Obviously transport costs are very high, but we present the best possible products at the best possible prices. People are returning to the store and they’re obviously liking what they see.”

Lionel said while all areas of the business were improving, he was heartened by the fact that rakes, shovels and general gardening sales were booming.

“You can see that a growing number of people around town are taking more care of their gardens and houses, and that means that they are once again becoming proud of where they live,” he said.
